A Family Matter   by Claire Lynch

Fiction

A Family Matter is about a mother, her three-year-old daughter, her husband, and the consequences of finding one’s self.

Dawn and Heron are a traditional couple living in the U.K. Dawn stays at home with her daughter, Maggie, and keeps house. She meets Hazel, and what starts as a friendship develops into a love story. Dawn wants to divorce her husband and start anew with Hazel and Maggie. Heron sues her for custody of their daughter. Gay people had few rights in 1982. A custody battle will be bloody.

Jumping forward to 2022, Maggie is married with children of her own. In cardboard boxes from the past, she finds out there is more to her story than she knew. She wonders if she wants to learn the truth about her mother and father and how her life could have been different.

With only 219 pages, A Family Matter is a quick read. It is fiction, but the story is based on real situations and outcomes.

I wasn’t quite ready for A Family Matter to end; I wanted more.
